KfW 300 for families: subsidised funding for climate-friendly new builds alongside a bank loan

The KfW Programme 300 (KfW 300 Home Ownership for Families) is a subsidised loan with a reduced interest rate, ranging from €170,000 to €270,000, for families who are building a climate-friendly home or purchasing their first home. There is no grant and no ‘Baukindergeld’ (child-related housing allowance). The amount of the loan depends on the number of children, income and the subsidy tier.

Who is eligible for the KfW 300 Home Ownership for Families scheme, and how much can you borrow?

The KfW 300 loan is available to families and single parents with at least one child under the age of 18 who are moving into a climate-friendly new-build property (Efficiency House 40) themselves. The loan ranges from €170,000 to €270,000; the maximum amount is subject to the family having five children and the property carrying the QNG seal. The taxable household income must not exceed €90,000 for a family with one child. You can find the original programme details on the KfW website at kfw.de/300.

How do you apply for KfW 300?

Via your usual bank, before the purchase contract is signed or construction begins.

Who gets KfW 300 — and how much? Families and single parents with at least one child under 18 who move into a climate-friendly new build (Effizienzhaus 40) themselves. The reduced-interest loan ranges from €170,000 to €270,000 — the amount depends on the number of children and the funding level; the maximum of €270,000 requires five children and the QNG seal. Federal and state funding.

Which limits apply — and how do you apply? The taxable household income must not exceed €90,000 with one child (plus €10,000 for each additional child), and there must be no previous home ownership in Germany. The application must be made via your own bank before the purchase contract or the start of construction — afterwards the funding is lost. Federal and state funding.

Can KfW 300 be combined? With a bank loan, always — KfW 300 never covers the total cost. Combining it with KfW 297/298 and KfW 261 for the same residential unit is excluded, but it is possible with the home ownership programme 124. Anyone who exceeds the income limit ends up with 124 — we check that in the free initial consultation. KfW 261 in detail.

Who is eligible for the KfW Loan 300 (Home Ownership for Families)? The KfW Loan 300 (Home Ownership Support for Families, WEF) is aimed at families with at least one minor child who are building or buying their first owner-occupied home. Support is provided in the form of a low-interest loan, the amount of which increases with the number of children.

The eligibility criteria include an upper limit on taxable household income, which increases with each child, and a climate-friendly new-build property meeting the Efficiency House 40 standard. Purely financial investors are not eligible to apply — the scheme is specifically designed for owner-occupiers. As with all KfW schemes, the application is submitted via your own bank prior to signing the purchase contract.

As income thresholds and loan amounts are subject to change, we check the current situation before each application — and whether the 300 really does reduce the total cost.

  • €270k max. from 5 children, with QNG
  • €250k with 3–4 children, with QNG
  • €220k with 1–2 children, with QNG
  • EH 40 mandatory (climate-neutral)

Important: Order of applications. KfW funding will be forfeited if the application is submitted after the deadline. We ensure that the order of applications is correct.

KfW 300 in detail: For which projects does it pay off, and what is ruled out?

Only for climate-friendly new builds (Efficiency House 40 or better) within the income limit, and not together with KfW 297/298 for the same residential unit.

Check with your tax adviser in advance to find out your relevant taxable household income for the year of application.

For climate-friendly new-builds only: KfW 300 applies exclusively to climate-friendly new-builds (Efficiency House 40 or better) — that is, QNG-certified properties or those of comparable efficiency. Existing buildings and refurbishments are not eligible for funding.

Combination with KfW 297: For the same residential unit, the combination of KfW 300 (Home Ownership for Families) with KfW 297/298 (Climate-friendly new builds) is not permitted — as stated in KfW Information Sheet 300 (as at 12/2025). Families must choose one of the two programmes before submitting their application.

Application: Submit the application before the purchase agreement is signed or construction begins — via your main bank. We will coordinate the timetable and documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I use the KfW 300 calculator to work out the monthly instalment?

In the KfW repayment calculator. Select ‘KfW 300’ and enter the interest rate. The loan amount is pre-filled but can be changed. The calculator shows the instalment and the outstanding balance for KfW 300.

Has the KfW 300 scheme been discontinued, or is it still running?

The KfW website lists KfW 300 as an ongoing scheme: the application is submitted via your main bank before the purchase contract is signed or construction begins. As income thresholds and loan amounts are subject to change, we check the current details before submitting each application.

Who is eligible to apply for KfW 300?

Families and single parents with at least one child under 18 in the household who move into the new build themselves. Two hurdles are regularly overlooked: the taxable household income must not exceed €90,000 with one child (plus €10,000 for each additional child) — what counts is the average of the two tax assessments before the year of application, not the gross salary. And there must be no previous home ownership in Germany. Anyone who exceeds one of these limits ends up with the home ownership programme 124 — we check that too.

How much is the KfW 300 loan?

The amount depends on two factors, not just one: the number of children and the subsidy tier. For the ‘Climate-friendly residential building’ level, the figures are €170,000 (1–2 children), €200,000 (3–4 children) and €220,000 (5 or more children). With the QNG seal, these same levels rise to €220,000, €250,000 and €270,000.

The often-cited maximum amount of €270,000 therefore requires five children and the QNG seal.

Can I combine KfW 300 with other schemes?

With a bank loan, of course — that’s the norm; the KfW 300 scheme never covers the full costs. With the KfW 297/298 (climate-friendly new-build) and KfW 261 schemes, however, combining them for the same residential unit is not permitted. You have to make a decision — and that decision must be made before you apply, not afterwards. A combination is possible with the Home Ownership Programme 124.

How does the KfW Home Ownership Scheme for Families work?

KfW Home Ownership for Families is Programme 300: a low-interest loan for families with children, intended for climate-friendly new-builds or first-time home purchases. Applications for the KfW Home Ownership for Families scheme must be made through the bank before the purchase agreement is signed or construction begins.

KfW 300 interest rates: Where can I find the interest rate?

The interest rates for the KfW 300 are set on a daily basis; we have deliberately chosen not to quote a specific figure here. The interest rate set out in the approval letter is binding. Current terms and conditions can be found at kfw.de.

KfW Family Support (Familienförderung) for existing properties: what do families need to bear in mind when buying a home?

The KfW family support scheme for buying a home is available for new-build properties under scheme 300 and for existing properties under the ‘Young Buys Old’ scheme (308). The KfW support scheme for families buying existing properties is therefore 308, not 300; anyone buying a house in need of renovation should check this scheme.
