German settlement account

Many German banks expect interest and repayment to be collected by direct debit from a German or SEPA-capable account. For a borrower living abroad that can be a formal condition of the loan, not just a practical suggestion. It is worth settling early.

What is a German settlement account?

Many German banks expect interest and repayment to be collected by direct debit from a German or SEPA-capable account. For a borrower living abroad that can be a formal condition of the loan, not just a practical suggestion. It is worth settling early. Why banks insist on this detail. A direct debit from a German or SEPA-capable account keeps the running payment simple for the bank compared with manual transfers from abroad, which arrive late, cost conversion, or are forgotten. Reliable automatic collection lowers the bank's operational risk, which is why the requirement survives even when the rest of the case is straightforward. What the law says, and where it stops. Inside the European Union a payee using direct debit may not specify the member state in which the account is held. So a German account is not a legal precondition when your account sits in the Union. Outside the Union the rule does not apply: for an account in Dubai, Singapore or the United States, whatever the bank asks for is a matter of its own lending rules.

What the law says, and where it stops

Inside the European Union a payee using direct debit may not specify the member state in which the account is held. So a German account is not a legal precondition when your account sits in the Union. What can fail about a German account that already exists

Not every account with a German IBAN meets the requirement. Banks regularly ask for an account in the borrower's name, released for direct debit and without restrictions on disposal — an account at a direct bank domiciled elsewhere in the EU can fail that test although the IBAN looks German. Closing the German account when you move away often closes a financing option with it.

Opening one in time

Opening a German account without a German address is possible but slower than people expect: identification under the money laundering rules is stricter for non-residents and sometimes runs only through particular branches or video ident. Start it alongside the financing request, not after the approval. Some banks that lend also want the instalment account with them — worth clarifying before you open two.
